Imagined Identities

With this body of work I explore the ambivalence behind identifying oneself as a woman and a Dominican; the exuberant, the sexual, the tradition, patriarchy ,the spiritual and the chaotic. I explore these contradictions through collage, video, installation and performance. Most of my artworks position catholic, dominican voodoo and taino symbols next to each other, sometimes even blending together into new symbols. I also make reference to the everyday life of a woman in the Dominican Republic and the ridicule our own pop culture and tradition make when portraying us.
All of my art is part of a bigger project, ATABEY, in which I collaborate with Iman Muñiz, a fellow artist and Sexual Studies M.A.
