<image:caption>About Pellizas: Pellizas are a traditional hand woven rag rug from the Dominican Republic. The original Pelliza rugs were made with remnants of clothes and fabric and woven into plastic rice sacs. The fabric, which has to be cut in 5” long strips (approximately), is pushed through holes in the sacks and then knotted.

The public was invited to reflect upon the question: “If you had the opportunity to purge/eliminate something from this land or your life, what would it be?” and to write in a piece of water-soluble paper their answers. The papers were given to the artist which she proceeded to read aloud and then deposit the papers on a clear water bowl in front of her. At the end of the performance each participant’s hands were cleansed by the artist and a memorabilia was given to them. <image:caption>Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Presented at the International Festival of Performance KilómeterCERØ'17 More than 110 people in Santo Domingo were asked: "What would you like to purge / eliminate / release from your life or the island?" The public was invited to bring something written on a piece of paper that answered this question. The action included a reading aloud each message and later burning with oil the papers, to remove the curse, and the performance concluded with sea water and water fromsunflowers, while the artist repeated the mantra: "Que lo simbólico no se quede en el limbo, que lo simbólico sea catarsis, que lo simbólico incite a la acción- que no estamos solos, coño." (That the symbolic does not remain in limbo, that the symbolic is catharsis, that the symbolic incites action - that we are not alone, coño.) Audience is also invited to interact with the soft-sculpture. About: LovingSUITS is a developing project which encompasses soft weighted sculptures and multimedia documentation of Dominican feminized folks narratives around family dynamics, love and self-love. The original weighted sculptures were made while being a Van Lier Fellow with Smack Mellon. The soft weighted sculptures are filled with plastic beads and plush, and anointed with lavender, rosemary and frankincense. The design of each sculpture takes into account pressure points in the upper body to soothe tension and provide comfort. The result of these interviews are recorded narratives that capture multigenerational experiences of Dominicans from diverse households and with different migration stories.</image:caption>

The soft weighted sculptures are filled with plastic beads and plush, and anointed with lavender, rosemary and frankincense. The design of each sculpture takes into account pressure points in the upper body to soothe tension and provide comfort. LovingSUITS also expand to visual representations that reflect on concepts of love and liberation through a decolonial lens. After COVID-19 hit NYC, LovingSUITS also exists in the digital realm, allowing diverse feminized folks to participate and try to create self-soothing soft sculptures at home. LovingSUITS is also holding space around decoloniality and anti-Blackness in Dominican communities.

The soft weighted sculptures, made out of soft fabric, are filled with plastic beads and plush, and anointed with lavender and frankincense. These vary in sizes and weight, but always have the shape of hands at the ends, simulating connecting limbs that can be molded into an “embrace”.
